When renowned crime novelist Harlan Thrombey dies just after his 85th birthday, the inquisitive and debonair Detective Benoit Blanc arrives at his estate to investigate. From Harlan’s dysfunctional family to his devoted staff, Blanc sifts through a web of red herrings and self-serving lies to uncover the truth behind Thrombey’s untimely demise.
Knives Out comes with a killer cast and a clever script. For fans of the murder-mystery genre—and I am, admittedly, one—this film offers its share of gratifying twists and even a rare moral of sorts. But when it comes time to cuff this flick, the charge will undoubtedly be murder most foul words. Knives out is officially out on Blu-ray and 4K so let’s take a look at the exclusive Best Buy steel book! Don’t forget I’m having a contest for a free Blu-ra. My name is Rian Johnson, and I wrote and directed ‘Knives Out.’ So this is a scene about 45 minutes into the movie, where we first get to meet Chris Evans’ character, Hugh Ransom Drysdale. Nevertheless, Knives Out does look pretty stunning in 4K. It’s not that picture-perfect, pristine gem that we’ve all become spoiled by, but it just has a nice look and feel to it. We’ve got all the usual caveats in place with HDR, nice detail, wonderful colors and the like. Under review here is the US Lionsgate release of Knives Out on 4K UltraHD disc. This edition also contains a Blu-ray and a digital code. Resolution is promised as four times sharper than HD on this format, though it's at least arguable as to exactly how much the average viewer will discern the upgrade.

Review:
This movie was shot with Arri Alexa cameras at 5.1 & 3.1k and finished at a 2k digital intermediate, that means you’ll get an upscaled presentation on this disc (though you can’t tell). On top of that, as per the norm with UHD releases, it was also given a HDR color grade for your viewing pleasure in both Dolby Vision & HDR10+. (There is some grain, so grain-haters beware.)
Something to note immediately is the process that this film was made by. This was the first film Rian Johnson shot digitally, not on his favorite format, film. Why did he do this? His cinematographer Steve Yedlin convinced him that he could make digital look like actual film because he would have control over every aspect of the final footage. (News flash, he’s right. If you have any interest in this I suggest checking out his site, he breaks this down piece by piece. I will never be a cinematographer and I enjoyed learning more about the process immensely.)

What’s strange about this 2020 UHD release is it looks like an old film that was upgraded to UHD. It truly has the appearance of being shot on film, it’s rather amazing that it wasn’t. In hindsight, having this technology available will only give more directors in today’s cinema world to create the exact environment that they envision. It’s quite exciting when you think about it.
Keeping to the standard, this UHD release showcases fine detail, depth and dimension in nearly every scene. Character close-ups display a lot of detail including pores, beard stubble, makeup, blemishes — the works. It can be seen further in the Thrombey mansion’s elaborate set pieces and in the characters wardrobe — the finest pieces of material are distinguishable, rich, defined and rather striking. Through and through it’s a sharp disc that has all the benefits of what UHD can bring to the table except for one factor, HDR use.
Knives Out 4k Uhd
HDR is in play, just not in the same way you may be accustomed to. In this case, the lighter load was done with exact intention from the director and cinematographer. Usually, HDR will bring that POP! and brightness to the various colors and lighting, but in this case everything feels classic and timeless, harking back to what I said about a remaster of an older film. Knives Out is so consistently perfect in the sense that it never gets too bright nor too dark. The natural lighting of the somber mansion sits flawlessly against the backdrop of a rich and heavily-decorated set. It’s lush, it’s dense and heavy, while also being close-knit, crowded and congested — all in the best possible way.
After reading and listening to what Yeldin describes in his cinematography process, I have no right to even comment on the matter because it’s way out of my league.
In conclusion --
Let’s get one thing straight, this is a great movie through and through — it’s pure entertainment that’s not only smart and witty, but funny and perfectly paced. Did you see the acting cast on this film? Every character fills their role perfectly and adds to the substance of the film. Knives Out is the movie that was made for all movie lovers, it’s not only a perfect fit, but a film you can re-watch and learn something new every time.
The bonus features on this disc include commentary by the director, deleted scenes, an eight part documentary, director and cast Q&A, marketing gallery, viral ads and more. If you are looking to dive deeper into this film, you won’t be disappointed.
Taking everything I’ve said into account, Knives Outgets my recommendation for an automatic day-one purchase. Do yourself a favor, grab a copy at your local retailer on either 4K or Blu-ray today. You won’t be disappointed. It’s one of the best films of 2019, don’t sleep on it. While the discussion around digital, film, HDR and 4K can get out of hand, or just straight up nerdy — I love it.

Knifes Out 4k Review
A movie I thought deserved more attention at award season was Knives Out. A highly entertaining “who-done-it” murder mystery even though you can figured out pretty quickly who was behind things.
Detective Benoit Blanc (Daniel Craig) is called to the famous crime novelist Harlan Thrombey’s (Christopher Plummer) mansion as there has been a mysterious murder that has happened. Everyone that’s a part of the Trombey family is considered a suspect including Harlan’s spoiled playboy grandson Hugh (Chris Evans), son-in-law Richard (Don Johnson), Harlan’s nurse (Ana De Armas), Harlan’s youngest son Walt (Michael Shannon), Harlan’s eldest daughter Linda (Jamie Lee Curtis) and others. Blanc is determined to get to the bottom of things and try to figure out what’s a lie and what’s the truth.
Finally a movie that isn’t based on a franchise or from a book – an original screenplay by The Last Jedi’s director Rian Johnson. He took all the criticism for Star Wars and never directed or wrote a movie again! Oh right, he went on to write and direct a movie that was nominated for some awards after that. Rightfully so, because Knives Out was highly entertaining murder mystery. Granted you know who dies pretty quickly, and who did it. Of course there’s some twist and turns in there, like with most type of murder mystery films. It was just a blast to watch from start to finish, at least I thought so.
The cast is all-star, what can you say. You have Daniel Craig doing a Southern accent, Ana de Armas being caught up in all the drama, Chris Evans playing a smug douche, and of course Christopher Plummer being a delight to watch in the time he was given on screen. Can’t forget Jamie Lee Curtis, Michael Shannon, Don Johnson and Toni Collette as well. With an all-star cast that is this vast, it’s a shame they didn’t see as much as screen time as they all deserved. People had issues with Craig’s accent but I didn’t think it was too much of a distraction. Honestly, the first movie that I saw him in was Road to Perdition and he spoke with an American accent so…
If you have the 4k or Blu-Ray, there’s a bunch of special features commentary, deleted scenes, a feature-length featurettes called Making a Murder, a decent Q&A with the cast and Johnson, and some other things. The Making a Murder multi-part documentary was excellent and very long. Definitely something to watch after you see the film, to see how Johnson developed the story and filmed it. I love when there’s this much content included on Blu-Ray and 4k discs. The deleted scenes were okay, and come with commentary if you want to hear what Johnson thought. They were just small snippets, mostly featuring Detective Blanc and some of the other characters that didn’t get featured as much.
Rian Johnson developed an interesting character with Blanc, but just the overall story as well. While you can sort of figure out who did something, it’s how you got there that was the most important part. I can’t wait to see the sequel: 2 Knives 2 Out. I highly recommend seeing Knives Out!
